More recommendations were found for the use of acupuncture than are known within acupuncture or medical communities. 2189 positive recommendations were found for the use of acupuncture. Of these, 1486 were related to 107 pain indications and 703 were related to 97 non-pain indications. From the study, about 68% versus 32% of the recommendation for acupuncture were related to the pain.
One of the attached paper highlights that US is facing a national opioid epidemic and medical systems are in need of non-pharmacological strategies to suppress the public opioid dependency. Acupuncture stands out as the most evidence-based to fulfill these calls, while providing safe, easy and cost-effective care. The paper supplements the key information for the acupuncture education program related to determinants of health in public, and specific focus on pain.
VA Evidence Map of Acupuncture publication provides overview of the distribution of evidence for acupuncture and executive summaries to help stakeholders interpret the state of evidence to inform policy and clinical decision making. The project maps the literature for indications pain, mental health and wellness; and any clinical area for which at least 3 reviews and/or recent large RCT exists.
